deckels asked New bulletproof backpacks: would you buy one?

Here’s an article about two Boston dads who invented (and are selling) a $175 backpack with bulletproof metallic insert to keep their kids safe at school. A good investment?

http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=1016084

And got the following answer:

Buying this product would be a horrible idea.

You’d be benefiting a greedy manufacturer who intends to exploit the fear of parents by selling a product of questionable utility.

How can the armor material be a ‘secret’ and also meet NIJ standards? It’s unlikely to have passed NIJ testing since there’s no mention of ‘MJ Safety Solutions’ or ‘My Child’s Pack’ in the database of tested products. NIJ has several standards in different areas a reputable firm would have specified the standard met and the independent testing agency that verified compliance. Even if they do show compliance with some NIJ standards, how are these standards applicable for a kid using this product?

The examples, comparisons, and quotes used in the article are disturbing and misleading.
“We have tested and tested this product and we are very excited about it. We researched every school shooting since 1900 and found that our product is resistant to 97 percent of all bullets used,”Resistant to 97% of all bullets used in school shootings is a long way from showing that this product would have saved any lives in those school shootings.
The backpacks weren’t due to go on sale until the start of the school year but Pelonzi brought the release date forward to Friday, days after a Herald review revealed how more than 500 weapons were recovered from Boston’s public schools in the past year.
Clearly Pelonzi sees the benefit of using fear to sell his product.
The backpacks, which will cost $175, have a super-lightweight bullet-proof plate sewn into the back which weighs no more than a bottle of water. Pelonzi said the material used is a secret.

The plate material meets National Institute of Justice safety standards, said Pelonzi, and during a three-year testing phase, stood up to bullets as well as machete, hatchet and Ka-bar knife attacks.
In this and other articles Pelonzi is trying to both claim his armor is light in weight and offers the same protection as a police officer’s body armor. This is especially apparent in other articles where he compares the weight of police body armor to the backpack without acknowledging the greater coverage provided by police vests.

Think of how kids carry backpacks. How much protection will this thing provide slung over one shoulder? Even worn on both shoulders it would provide poor protection in a close-quarters gun fight. Is Pelonzi willing to demonstrate his product under those conditions? Let’s see a video of test dummies optimally protected with backpacks being fired on by a single shooter. Even if you restrict the shooter to a fixed position and give him a limited time he’ll likely do some serious damage to these poorly protected students.
“It seems to me that it would not serve our district-wide dress code which says that students cannot wear anything which is threatening or offensive,” said Jonathan Palumbo, Boston Public Schools spokesman.
Palumbo’s argument seems lame at first glance, what’s offensive or threatening about an armored backpack? Isn’t it purely defensive? The point he’s making is a good one, a student with this backpack might feel sufficiently protected to confront a gunman and escalate a potentially violent situation that might have been brought under control by trained authorities.

My primary concern about this product is the false sense of security it provides students and their parents. A student would require a great deal of training and practice to make any use of this as a protective device. I suggest that time would be better spent educating students how to react to these situations safely without limited body armor. I wouldn’t want any kid deciding to rely on this type of protection. I’d rather they acted smart and retreated in a safe fashion.

asked What is the point of studying Filipino stick fighting if you probably won’t have a fighting stick in a fight?

What’s the point of Filipino stick fighting if you probably won’t have a fighting stick if you get jumped. Any object you pick up from the environment will probably be too weak or too heavy to effectively be used as a replacement for your fighting stick. So what’s the point of studying Filipino stick fighting arts like Kali, Arnis, Escrima, or Kombatan.

And got the following answer:

Aside from being able to use other implements you can pick up that resembles a stick for self defense, training in Filipino arts allows you to become familiar with the use of weapons, both stick and blade. In case you didn’t know, most Filipino arts are blade based. But due to safety and legal concerns, just like in Kendo, a stick is used during training instead of the sharp Bolo or long utility knife which resembles a machete that is a common household tool in the Philippines. Once you become familiar with the use of this blade or a stick as a substitute, you advance to training with a short knife or dagger and then graduated to unarmed techniques against a blade. So the whole point of training in arts like Kali, Eskrima or Arnis is not only in how to use a stick or blade, but how to defend against them as well.

BK9 Becker Combat Bowie
Manufactured by: Ka-Bar
Price: $84.70

The BK9 combat-ready design is the culmination of over 30 years of survival and para-military training and outfitting experience. The Becker Combat Bowie is a synthesis of Becker’s uniquely ergonomic trademark handle design with a traditionally profiled, highly effective American Bowie style blade. This trademark Becker handle is well known for allowing extended periods of heavy use with less user fatigue than most other knives in its class.

The 9″ Bowie inspired shape of the Combat Bowie is a useful performer in a variety of fieldcraft and combat chores. The stout .210″ thick 0170-6 high carbon tool steel blade is thinly ground for the ultimate in chopping with a deep belly and thin edge that still allows for controlled slicing. The short clip edge gives the Combat Bowie a unique blade profile that pierces well but is strong enough for many prying and digging tasks. In addition, the grip tang of the Combat Bowie incorporates a uniquely shaped butt extension that will work well for most light hammering jobs in the field.

The Combat Bowie sheath is black propex Nylon with an internal Kydex stiffener for user safety during hard use. This sheath has been extensively field tested overseas with the Combat Utility Model (BK-7) and has received many accolades from military and civilian user’s alike. An elasticized auxiliary pouch appropriately sized for a survival kit or spare handgun magazine is permanently attached to the front of the sheath. This practical sheath is also ALICE compatible, and also jump-safe for Airborne operations.

LMF II – ASEK, Coyote Brown
By:Gerber Blades
Price: $64.17

Down behind enemy lines? Left to fend for yourself? These are the scenarios that inspired the LMF II. Former military man, Jeff Freeman led the charge to engineer this fearless new 10″ survival knife. And we field-tested with the troops.

This knife is as adaptable as the personnel who carry it. Use it to cut through the skin of a fuselage. Or sever a seat belt. Or egress through the Plexiglas of a chopper. Plus, the LMF II does a slick job cutting firewood and building shelter.

The over-molded handle successfully limits blistering. There is complete separation between the tang and butt cap, so the knife absorbs the shocks from hammering and prevents the shocks of electricity. Smartly situated grooves and lashing holes let the LMF II convert to a spear. The low-profile sheath facilitates movement, limits noise, works for parachuting, and attaches to a belt or Molle vest. The patented, integrated sharpener means edge retention in the field.

Features:
– Rugged, versatile survival tool

– Safety knife included

– Low-profile sheath with built-in sharpener

Specifications:
– Overall Length: 10.59″

– Blade Length: 4.84″

HALLALJPAA asked When a person throws away their dreams to give to the needy for many years, is it wrong to expect anything?

I would like your thoughts on what you would do if this happened to you. The set up: The train I take home everyday stopped a station before mine and everyone was shuffled off. No more passanger trains where going to my station (this is not the problem). A sweet young lady was also panic on how to get to out stop. I normally would not do this but I asked to use her phone. I called my sister. My sister who had no place to live and 8 mos. pregnant with two young kids. Her husband was sleeping with another woman. I took her in and gave up a lot of things that made me happy. 1 year passes and her now ex-husband starts living in my house with the same girlfriend ( a woman who had her 3 month old permanently removed for having cuts and gashes on the child, she said he was playing on the counter and fell into the knife drawer) I stood up for my sister and kicked them out, I got a bigger house, completly throwing my dreams away. I paid for school for the kids, food, clothes, toys, all utilities, cable, internet a second computer and the list goes on. I can’t go out and meet people because I am raising a family. 5 years ahead her ex-husband gets out of jail and moves in. Year 6 month 4. I am trapped in another town. by car it would haave taken 15 minutes each way, She said, ” I don’t feel like it, I am want to finishe this movie and go to bed, let me check with (my ex-husband) No sorry he’d too tired too. Sorry Good luck!”. with th sun going down I knew the only sure fire way I would make it to my station was to walk the tracks. My back has been in bad shape but after two hours I could not feel anything. I exhausted my water supply as crossed into the third hour but looked like I just climbed out of a pool. It was total darkness everywhere the only sound was from my cain hitting the rail and I hear movement in the fields. My empty mind froze trying to keep the reality out but it did not last. I am walking through coyote and wolf territories. The only idea that crossed my mind was play possum. Street lights tempted me to come off the rocky tracks but I continued knowing that right now I am going in the 100% correct direction. I was a small level above sleep walking and I saw lights then it hit, there is a train coming!! I looked over the edge a good 8 foot drop into sharp rocks and looking behind me- I had 0 time to find a safer place and I leaped. 5 hours 47 minutes I laid in bed. I am slow to anger but I was angry, I was too tired to do anything but have tears roll down my face. Everyone was sound asleep when I got home. No one cared if I was going to make it okay or not. I woke up and realized most of the sweat I was wiping out of my eyes was blood. My face, neck, shoulder and legs were cut or punctured. My eye is swollen shut. My sister walked passed my room look at me for a second and just left for work. If I never moved in with her I would be living it up. Money supporting 6 – supporting one, during the prime of life, before I broke my back, when vacation meant time off to go on my yearly trips with my friends. Spending weekends in the city or going diving.
I leave immediately and my sister’s credit is ruined. I raised those kids and don’t want to walk out on them. I feel guilty for wishing I had a life, but I am angry this time. Not about a lost youth, not about lost money, or living paycheck to paycheck, Not about ever taking a vacation. I think I am angry that they happily take my money and don’t care. I don’t want to be an ATM machine anymore, but I am held back by feeling selfish.
here is my confliction
When did I stop giving without a reason?
Is it right to start mentally demanding a little appriciation?
Should it matter if anyone cares about my life and safety?
Am I just being selfish?

I pay for the house and have the smallest room with no heat, no A/C. All my belongings are in boxes because I have no room and if I ask for some space downstairs I am told no. I was given an amount of money that they would need if I died and pressured into buying a half a million insurance policy for them on me. I was told that they needed extra money. I started to work overtime and I found out I was paying for my sister to go back to school.

Thank you for reading this. Thank you a million times over for answering.

And got the following answer:

Quit being such a doormat.

You’re enabling these people by supporting them. Make them stand on their own feet, and you work on taking care of yourself.
