Mom was first to attack, suspect in killing says – Hawaii News – Honolulu Star-Advertiser

When officers found her Monday in the single-room Kahului home she shared with her son, she had deep cuts to her back, face, hands and head, The Maui News reported Friday. Her son, Keoni Vinuya Tomas, is being held on $1 million bail. He couldn’t be reached for comment on the allegations at Maui Community Correctional Center. He was expected to receive a court-appointed attorney. On Tuesday, during questioning by a detective, Tomas said that during the argument, he took the knife and bat from his mother. He said he stabbed her all over her body and clubbed her with the bat. At the scene, a detective reported seeing a “large amount of very low blood splatter, suggesting blunt-force trauma while the victim was on the ground,” according to a police affidavit filed in court.

Keoni Vinuya Tomas

In the case of Otsukas murder, police were eventually led to Tomas and found cuts on his hand. Still, police released him as they awaited, and continue to wait for, results from DNA samples sent to a laboratory operated by the Honolulu Police Department. KHON2 asked Maui prosecutor John Kim whether homicide cases submitted for lab testing should be given priority. I would hope that to be true, said Kim, but I dont run the lab. I have no control over that. While Kim and Maui police could not comment directly on Otsukas murder, police did say the investigation can be difficult if a suspect does not consent to providing a sample for DNA testing. Kim would not comment if his office will pursue a court order to compel a sample from Tomas.
