Benchmade 710 – Get The High End Multi Purpose Pocket Knife

The next few paragraphs offers important tips and advice that could help you successfully pick a pocket knife for your needs. Find the best pocket knife and it will serve you well for years to come.

The Benchmade 710 was designed by custom knife makers Bill McHenry and Jason Williams. It is the end product of their hard work over the course of 4 years. The popular AXIS lock makes it possible for easy one-handed opening and closing of the blade without your fingers ever being in the path of the blade. The lock was also designed by Bill and Jason. The lock design is straightforward to activate without directions needed on how the knife works.

As simple as the lock is, perhaps its major selling feature is its brute strength. In testing, the lock supported a negative load of over 200 pounds with no damage. After the lock finally failed, the liners simply cracked over the locking pin but in no way would the blade have closed on the user hand in testing.

For great functional redundancy, the AXIS lock features two Omega shaped springs. The springs are lightly stressed and tests demonstrate they should last indefinitely. Even though one spring fails, another will still operate without any problems.

It is difficult to say if this is the most durable lock made in folding knives. The manufacturer states the Benchmade 710 is more robust than any other knives on market. The sizable 3.9″ D2 Tool Steel blade of the 710 features a reverse-curve grind for better cutting ability.

On the butt end of the knife, there is a detachable stainless steel pocket clip. The butt end position of the clip is required as a result of the locking system. If the clip were positioned on the pivot end, the knife would stick out much very far out of your pocket.

The belt clip is reversible and feels natural in hand. I have the 710 Benchmade and use it for everything – cutting paper and cardboard, cutting string, heavy duty plastic box straps, cutting into the occasional snack, etc. It holds its edge very well.

Sodbuster Knives

Over 150 years ago the Sodbuster Plough was invented to plough the hard dry ground of the Great Western Plains of the USA.

Because of the dry arid conditions, the topsoil was baked into an extremely hard crust known as ‘Sod’.

Traditional iron ploughs were not strong enough, and the ‘Sodbuster Plough’ made of steel was introduced to do the job.

The 1862 Homestead Act provided 160 acres of free land to anyone willing to set up a farm in the Great Plains. The top layer of earth or Sod was so tough that it was used as building bricks by Homesteaders in the Great Plains. Other inventions around this time were, barbed wire to fence off and protect farm land, horse-drawn reapers, binders and threshers and combine harvesters.

The Sodbuster Knife is a large size, low cost, single bladed folding knife. The size has been scaled down recently and UK legal carry Sodbuster Junior knives are available.

imlikenoother asked How do you sharpen a sword?

Ok well I bought a sword at a yard sale recently and it is dulled Because the guy didn’t have a license or something to sell weapons. The edge is about half an inch wide.

And got the following answer:

If as you say the blade is about one half inch wide you may have to find someone that does that for a living as the sharpened edge of the blade is much thinner. Since there may be a problem I’m going to send you 5 listings of how you yourself can sharpen it and if I am lucky I can find some sword sharpeners and will send 5 of them. Since I don’t know where you live I hope you may be able to locate someone close to you

k2j2unk asked Estate sale: do-it-yourself, or hire a professional? Pros and cons, from those who’ve done it either way?

My brother and I need to get rid our our late parents’ junk. One of us thinks we should do it ourselves. The other thinks we should hire someone to do it for us. In your experience, what are the pros and cons of each?

Our parents were middle-class, our mother was a hoarder and garage-sale junkie, so there’s lots of stuff from the early-1960s to 1980s (and some stuff from our grandmothers, from the 1940s). Most of it is not super-valuable, there may be some “collectible” things (knick-knacks, dishes, toys, old clothes), but most is junk or in bad shape. (The roof leaked, damaging stuff.)

[E.g., A professional:
Pros: can identify collectibles and know how to price things.
Cons: takes anywhere from 25%-75% of the proceeds. ]

I’m interested in hearing from those who have done it either way, or — even better — both ways. 🙂 Thank you!

And got the following answer:

We hired someone to take care of my grandparents estate and I will NEVER do it again. With my parents I will have an old fashion garage sale and let it go at that…..
Several things of my grandparents were stolen. Small things like arrowheads, pocket watches, coins, old pocket knives, things that were worth some money…. People TRAMPLED the yard and tracked the house like they owned it. Parked in the yard and neighbors yards with no care what so ever. There wasnt any way to control who did what, to many people. With a garage or yard sale I can control everyone to the garage or yard. and wont have a few hundred people at once, all day long. We hired professionals (best in our area) to do the job and it wasnt there fault what all happened. I was so upset over the whole thing. Even though we made alot of money and had to pay the professionals 20% of the sales. My grandfathers old antique car went VERY cheep, I wasnt told till after the sale that it even had sold, it didnt come up for auction like the other things did. (there were several cars.) I later found out that the girl that bought it was the auctioneers daughter, he had her bid and buy it for him. I have often wondered if they had anything to do with some of the stuff missing, but they seem to still be in business and are well known and used in our area. I was advised to handle it myself and didnt. Unlike you I didnt know how to price things, but I learned a lesson and will do it myself from now on. Good Luck to you.

You can contact collectors and even use ebay now with your most valuable things. And it really doesnt take that much more time to do it yourself as to get ready for someone else to do it for you. Post an estate sale just like an auctioner would. It all comes down to if you want to handle the merchandise and money or let someone else do it for you. You will have to be there all day either way you do it.

Justin asked Does anyone know where I can get a space marine scout sniper squad for cheap?

Online ive checked ebay, if you have any would you be willing to sell a squad for $15 including shipping?

And got the following answer:

I’ve started buying my WH40K models from:

http://www.thewarstore.com/

They offer most of Games Workshop’s products at a 20% discount everyday.

For example, they offer Space Marine Scouts w/Sniper Rifles at $20.00 instead of GW’s price of $25.00.
They have a flat shipping rate of $5.95 within the United States (not quite sure what it is for international orders).

I myself just ordered a bunch of Citadel paints and Imperial Guard stuff from them and the savings really did add up.

They also sale lots WH40K bits (need a bunch of shotguns for your Imperial Guard Veterans like me? You can get a set of 4 Space Marine Scout shotgun arms for $9.99 – which is better than buying a whole Scout kit for just a few bits, let me tell ya.)

And NO – I do not work for them (they’re located in New York; I live in Virgina). I’m just a gamer and hobbyist without unlimited funds, so any discount is a good discount in my book.

As for finding someone willing to sale you a $25 product at just $15 with shipping included… that’s highly unlikely.
You should know going in that war gaming is not a cheap hobby in general and WH40K is no different in that regard. And the models are just the beginning – you’ll also need a hobby knife and glue at the minimum. Primer, paint and brushes are next if you wanna attend tournaments. Not to mention the WH40K rulebook and appropriate codex for your chosen army. Just sayin’.

Good luck and good gaming.

lee asked Does any one know where i can get a new oldtimer pocket knife with carbon steel blades online other than ebay?

I want to know where i can get a brand new oldtimer junior stockman 108ot pocket knife with carbon steel blades. I have had old timers all of my life and cannot find them anywhere. Please tell if you know or if you have one.

And got the following answer:

I am sad to say Schrade Cutlery the maker of Old Timer Brand Knives, went out of business a few years ago and the brand names were sold off. The new knives(made overseas) have Stainless steel blade for the most part. There are thousands of Old Timer knives out there and you will just have to look around at yard sales and E-bay and the like to find what you are looking for. Another possible source would be small old time hardware stores that may have some old stock left over from years before. Smokey Mountain Knife works may also be a source for some of the old carbon steel blades as they purchased a large quantity of the old stock when the company was auctioned off. In the last few years a lot of the blades were made from stainless steel because that is what the market demanded. People did not and do not want to take the time and effort to maintain and care for a carbon steel blade. I am one of those people who still loves a good carbon steel blade for the superior edge holding and ease of sharpening it offers as well as just having a great appreciation of history and tools. I hope this answer helps you find what you are looking for and here are a few tips to help you identify a carbon steel blade. On a used knife the blade will generaly have a dark tint almost black because carbon steel reacts to acids and other elements by forming a dark patina. you may also see some surface rust. The rust is easy to remove if it is not too bad with a little light oil and some steel or bronze wool. I would choose the bronze wool as it will not leave behind microscopic fibers or residue that will also rust over time. You can find it at boating centers or even Home Depot. Any good light oil works, 3 in 1, WD-40 will work, liquid wrench even light motor oil will work well. Be careful and work slow and steady. After a good cleaning sharpen her up and enjoy a great knife for years to come. If you see a knife and it is new and shiny you can plunge it into a potato and if the blade turns black you have carbon steel, you can also try a magnet most carbon steels will be attracted to the magnet and most Stainless will not because they do not have enough iron it them. There are exceptions to both rules but it is an easy way to tell the difference, and most people do not carry a potato around with them LOL. Best Of Luck I hope you find what you are looking for.

Z asked Can spring assisted knives legally be carried concealed?

I’m aware of the difference between spring assisted knives and switchblades as defined by California state law. Obviously, spring assisted knives are legal to possess in California (where I live). There’s hundreds for sale on eBay which is a CA based company. Does anybody know if they can be carried around in public? Thanks.

And got the following answer:

So long as the knife is not a switchblade, it can be carried concealed. But if the blade locks in place, it must be carried closed (otherwise it is a dirk, and illegal to carry concealed). (Pen C 12020.)
