“It’s an ongoing thing. It never stops, so obviously, the more time you put into it, the better you should get,” he said. Hutchinson has spent 20 years training including going to Japan twice a year to keep up his training in Japanese military combatives. He has had students go into the military and policing. He said recent knife attacks in Calgary and Reginahaven’t increased his class sizes the same way as 9/11 did. “It hasn’t really hit home probably yet,” Hutchinson said. “We have a tendency to wait until a problem has happened before we actually go out and get training.” He said knives are still a dominant weapon of choice because they are easier to get than a gun.

Preston Johnson, who joined Oaklands staff in 2011, took out his pocket knife in a non-threatening way after several exchanges of horseplay between multiple students and the teacher, said Rutherford County Schools spokesman James Evans. The incident, which Evans called a poor choice in an attempt at humor, happened earlier in the week and was investigated by Principal Bill Spurlock Tuesday, Evans said in an e-mailed statement. The principal at the school interviewed students as part of the investigation, Evans wrote. Each student interviewed interpreted it as a joke, including the one in which it was directed. In the statement, Evans said the distance between the teacher and student was at least six feet, and the knife was held vertical to the floor. It was not pointed at the student.

Seventeen-year-old Alyssa Drescher has been expelled for the rest of the school year by the United South Central school board in Wells. The district has a zero tolerance weapons policy that recommends three to five days suspension and possible expulsion. Drescher says she accidentally left the pocket knife in her purse after doing chores at her boyfriends farm. The knife was discovered during an unannounced locker search.
