jonporada asked question about my spring assisted pocket knife?

hey i got this knife an the spring in it broke i need to find a replacement one, it goes from the blade to a plastic piece on the bottom on the knife, anyone know where to buy one online or in michigan?

And got the following answer:

If the knife is a name brand (Kershaw, Smith and Wesson, CRKT, Gerber… you get the idea) then you would contact that company for the part.

If the blade says “China” or “Pakistan” on the blade, you have two choices. Make the spring yourself, or toss the $3 knife and get a new one.

Kind of a big deal asked What kind of knife should I get?

I have bought a kershaw leek the past 4-5 times I bought a knife an I absolutely love it. Mainly because it comes very sharp from the factory and it has the assisted opening feature. The only thin is, just about all of the ones i ever owned the tips broke off. I am wondering what kind of metal I should look for that is stronger and isn’t going go break on me as easily. This particular knife says 1660, which I think is the grade of steel/whatever metal it is.

And got the following answer:

The 1660 is the model of the leek knife. It is made of tungsten steel with the blade being 440A and the handle being a softer 410A, however, both parts are still tungsten steel which is very hard. Apparently you are abusing the knife in some way if you keep breaking the points off of them. Take a look at the Kershaw Lahar, slightly larger and heavier, but the point will still break if you abuse it in the same way as the others. Other than that, leave the pocketknife arena and look at a heavier fixed blade belt knife.

F2008 asked How do I clean my knife?

So I went o a canoe/camping trip on Saco River in Maine and basically my Kershaw knife was used for everything from shotgunning a beer to cutting sausages/cheese and is disgustingly dirty and the smell is horrible not to mention the internals have sand in it so the spring assist only opens half way. How and where do I start from cleaning in it?

And got the following answer:

Wash it like you were doing dishes. When you’re done, let it dry out completely.

Now here’s a tricky part… You CAN take the handles off to clean it pretty thoroughly, but only one handle cover at a time. Take one side off, clean, dry, reassemble, then do the other side. If you try to take off both sides at once, the supporting pins may slip out and it won’t spring assist ever again. once done, wipe down with RemOil.

makemyday asked How sharp are the knife parts of swiss army knives?

Compared to say a Gerber or Leatherman multitool. Obviously, i know that it depends on wether you sharpen it or not, but which ones hold a sharp edge better, etc. Thanks very much.

And got the following answer:

The sharpness of any knife is not based on it’s name brand, rather by what sort of steel it uses, how it has been tempered, and to what degree it was sharpened by the manufacturer. Even within the same company there will be many different levels. Not all Victorinox or Gerber knives use the same steel, and or the same heat treatment through out the company. So while one Victorinox knife might be sharper then a given Gerber knife, another Gerber might be sharper then a given Victorinox.

A key point to remember while harder blades tend to make sharper knives they also tend to be more brittle, and not take as much abuse. Also they are very hard to sharpen if they get dull. The scalpel is sharp, a flake of obsidian is even sharper, but would be a poor choice for longevity. Hardness scales have more to do with marketing then quality among knives.

Contrary to mainstream belief, Gerber, Leatherman, and Swiss army knives are not prized very highly for their blades….they are mass produced basic functional utility tools, with decent blades. Their cheap, and get a job done. The above knives are more about various utility tools then simply their blades…if you went a better blade, I would choose a Kershaw, Benchmade, or Puma over any of those mentioned.

However Victorinox does have a good tradition for a mass production blade, it might be the best overall…but I usually either have a Kershaw or Benchmade pocket knife blade on me, and a Gerber for it’s tools, if I need it.

ikilledkenny84 asked What is the legal max blade length of spring assisted knives in California?

I want to buy a really sweet knife I found on bladeplay.com. I know that spring assisted knives are legal in California due to bill SB 274, but is there a maximum blade length for these knives in California?

And got the following answer:

Knife Carry Related Laws
– California penal code has two main sections interesting to us in this discussion: 653K and 12020. 653K belongs to the section 639-653.2 – Of Other And Miscellaneous Offenses and 12020 belongs to the section 12020-12040 – Unlawful Carrying and Possession of Weapons, that is in the link provided at the beginning of this paragraph. Penal code 653K defines what is a legal pocket knife and what is a switchblade and gravity or ballisong knife. Pocket knives, most likely that’d be a folding knife are legal, while switchblades, gravity and ballisong knives are illegal. Penal code 12020 deals with the street carry laws. There are other penal codes dealing with knife carry in specific places. Those are: penal code 626.10 which deals with the knife school carry rules. There is also penal code 171.b which deals with the knives in public buildings.

Simply put, the law defines what is illegal, so if your knife and carry isn’t what the law defines as illegal you should be fine. Once again, keep in mind the local laws. Details below.
Very Short Summary

State California allows for concealed carry of the folding knives and there is no limit to the blade length. As long as the knife is not banned by PC 653K it is legal. 653K does not make Assisted Openers(AO) illegal. However, depending on the particular AO mechanism and other details some AOs may fall under switchblade category. Kershaw Speed Safe is not one of them, it is perfectly legal, details further down. As far as the state law goes, fixed blades must be carried openly, in the sheath, on the waist. I can’t find where does the law ban either double edged blades or dirks and daggers. As the wording is, those are ok for open carry. No knives longer than 2.5″in the school, but folders are ok in the Universities and Colleges. Unless, they were banned by local authorities. No knives longer than 4″ in public buildings or buildings open to public meetings, e.g. courts, city halls, police stations, city council meetings, etc.
Penal Codes

653K
– Defines legal and illegal pocket knives. Full text of the penal code 653K. The most interesting part of the penal code is the following definition of the switchblade knives:

For the purposes of this section, “switchblade knife” means a knife having the appearance of a pocketknife and includes a spring-blade knife, snap-blade knife, gravity knife or any other similar type knife, the blade or blades of which are two or more inches in length and which can be released automatically by a flick of a button, pressure on the handle, flip of the wrist or other mechanical device, or is released by the weight of the blade or by any type of mechanism whatsoever.

Basically, this section outlaws switchblades, or automatic knives, plus ballisongs, or butterfly knives. Also whatever else can be opened with the flick of the wrist. However, there are lots of legitimate knives that also fall under that category. Next section clarifies that part:

kcg asked I want to know the quality and worth of kershaw knifes?

my neiborh a world war 2 veteran has a collection of kershaw knifes and gave me one out of his huge collection.

And got the following answer:
