Handmade File Knives

Handmade Knives by Daniel Fronefield

Pocket Knife Care Made Easy by Larry Clark

There are literally thousands of articles on the web that outline various methods of caring for your knives. In this article, I will break it down to the simplest terms using the KISS principle Keep It Simple Stupid to describe how to ensure your favorite knife lasts you many years. The information in this article is valid for all types of pocketknives, and can be used to care for all knives.

Whether you have one pocketknife or a huge collection of quality knives, including the full range of pocketknives, folding knives, fixed blade knives and pulti-purpose tools, you must maintain and care for them or they will deteriorate. I remember once when I pulled my favorite knife out of the leather sheath for the first time in a year, it was all stained and the blade was covered with rust.

Maybe you just gave your son or daughter their first pocketknife and want to teach them how to care for it. No matter if you are a hunter, hiker, camper, or wilderness backpacker, you know that a quality pocketknife is a valuable tool and, if properly cared for it will last you may years.

There are many brands of pocketknives and just as many levels of quality with varying degrees of corrosion resistance suffice it to say knives made with lower quality metals will require somewhat more care to ensure they stay corrosion-free. BUT for the purposes of this article, the prudent level of care described below should keep any knife in good working order.

1. USE YOUR POCKETKNIFE PROPERLY Remember a knife is not a screwdriver and a screwdriver is not a knife: Use your knife properly, cut only stuff your knife was made to cut avoid cutting cardboard or paper and never use a cutting board made of glass, granite, or other hard substances. And, of course, (but many people ignore this one) dont use your pocketknife as a screwdriver, chisel or a pry-bar.

2. STORING YOUR POCKETKNIFE When not in use wipe your pocketknife lightly with oil ( a good silicone spray lubricant can also be used) and store it in a dry place. NEVER store your knife in its sheath especially a leather sheath, as leather tends to hold moisture and can cause corrosion.

3. CLEANING AND OILING Many normal uses for your knife such as pealing citrus fruit, cleaning fish or skinning game can leave corrosive residues on your knife. After using your knife, always clean the entire knife with mild soapy water. Then dry it thoroughly and apply a liberal coating of clean oil before putting it into storage. Finally, if you dont use the knife frequently, take it out 3-4 time a year to inspect it for corrosion, and apply a new coat of oil. These actions will ensure a long life for your knife.

4. SHARPENING Always keep your pocketknives sharp. A sharp knife is more efficient and easy to use. There are a number of different styles of knife sharpeners the three primary styles are sharpening stones, diamond sharpening sticks, and ceramic crock sticks. All of these have their pros- and cons- but they all can sharpen knives effectively. When sharpening your pocketknife, I recommend you sharpen to the original angles of the blade. Just follow the instructions that came with the sharpener. Remember there is no need to grind the knife away – go slowly and check progress after every few strokes and stop when you have reached the desired sharpness. When done, dont forget to wipe the blade clean and apply a light coat of oil or silicone protectant.

IN CONCLUSION Take good care of your pocketknives and they will last for many years.

Keep your pocketknife clean and dry.

Oil your knife frequently; especially pivot points and the blade.

Keep your knife sharp; a sharp blade is safer than a dull one.

When not in use, remove your knife from the sheath and store in a dry environment

My handmade file knife “F.M.J”

Illiana asked I have a toy..Now what?

I’m 15. I designed this toy a few months ago. Not to sell, but for my little sister’s birthday. I wanted to give her something original, handmade, and that she would keep forever (or years and years and years). Anyways since then I’ve been giving making more and giving them to all the people I know and they love them! I don’t know if I would really call it a “toy” though because adults are asking me to make them for themselves. Best part is it only takes about $3 to make. I feel so stupid because it wasn’t until last week that I thought abotut selling them. I didn’t even think of it on my own. My aunt’s friend asked how much it would cost to make her one at a party and I told her it was free, but she insisted on paying me.. and so did the other 16 people there!!! So my aunt just blurted out it was for $12 (idk where she got that from. lol) Anyways, sorry about the details I’m just excited. $204 my first day (in a few hours too). Oh and it’s Christian related. A lot of people at my church are requesting them, but my Grandma just told me I should get a patent before I sale anymore. But I honestly don’t know much about any of that stuff.. It’s has to be handmade like I said, so I’m trying to get my friends to help me so I don’t have to make so many by myself. My hands are sore. SORRY about the unnecessary information, but I want to sell more of them .. legally. I don’t think this is legal.. is it? I don’t know like I said. Any advice. What should I do now
? I think it’s a good enough and there’s nothing else like it ( I’ve literally searched everywhere and online).. better than that stupid pillow pet thing.. (no offense to people who like them, I think it’s a waste of money..). Why spend $20 when I can buy a pillow and a toy animal for less?

And got the following answer:

Do you know about the Provisional Patent Application? It only costs $125 and was designed by Congress to give individual inventors a chance at bringing their inventive ideas to market easily. It is SUPER EASY to do..

To see the top 10 reasons to file a Provisional Patent Application please watch the second video in this blog.

If a provisional patent application looks like the right thing for you to do then take a look at another website that shows EXACTLY how to file one using a video format.

If you need to know how to get your product sold on TV or to Costco, or Home Depot, or Target and the like then you might also enjoy reading this information by the Ginsu Knife guy! It is pretty cool. He gives you all his contacts and personal email!

Of course you could ALSO just go to the US Patent Office and figure out how to file a patent yourself. Here is the link..
The flow chart there is pretty nice to give you an idea how to do what you want to do!

Their patent search is hard to use and you need special programs to look at the patents… Instead, consider using Google Patent Search!

Here is how you can use Google Patent Search to search for an “Oscillating inertial microbalance”

Just type the term you want to search for in the search box. Play with MANY variants of your inventive idea.

Also, for a more global patent search look here:

Remember… Patents are MOSTLY “Improvements” on other inventions.. So, while you may see something SIMILAR to your inventive idea it does not mean that you cannot patent your IMPROVEMENT.. Example… A tire is an IMPROVEMENT on a wagon wheel. A radial biased ply tire is an IMPROVEMENT on a non radial biased tire. There are over 10,000 patents on tires… Nearly every single one is an improvement!

And… a special gift for you is a sample Non Disclosure (also called an NDA) that you would have folks sign when you show them your inventive idea. You can change it up and use others but if you have NOTHING now it is a very good start written by my lawyer who charged me a TON for it!

If you like my answer can you vote on it?

da cool fool asked hi guys haz anyone got a fab idea for xmas decorations. Not baybyish things like chains or something like that?

i need handmade decorations for christmas but i don’t want baby ones.help pleaz!!!

And got the following answer:

you could make nutty christmas critters

materials:Walnuts for the bodies,acorns for the faces,Wood file,scraps of fabric,pom poms,and glue.

Craft Project Instructions:

Insert knife into the larger end of the walnut and carefully twist to pry the halves apart; remove nut meat. Place walnut sections on newspaper and give them two coats of a fast-drying, flat enamel spray paint. When nut halves are dry, apply two coats of the final color of paint. When the paint is dry, glue both halves together. After the glue is dry, file off the point of the walnut.Pick a nut, such as a filbert or acorn, to use as the character’s head. Glue the head to the filed end of the walnut body. You can position the filbert, or the nut chosen as head, in whichever direction looks best for your chosen character. The pointed end of the nut can work as a facial feature, such as a nose, a pointy head or a neck.Use acrylic paint and fine brush, or opaque paint markers, to paint a face.Seal everything with a coat of acrylic spray.Decorate the nutty critters any way you want using felt, lace, rickrack, pompoms (for arms), bows, yarn, cord, sequins, pipe cleaners, chenille (for beards or hair) or beads etc.Refer to the photos for ideas on how to decorate specific characters. Here, we used black and white felt shapes to dress a nun; we wrapped Mother Mary in a small scrap of blue fabric and tucked in a tiny baby Jesus; the Wise King sparkles with sequin buttons, plus silver trim on his purple felt robe; Santa, of course, is dressed in traditional red and white, with a tiny white pompom to trim Santa’s hat.

asked How to stop guitar string buzzing in the nut.?

I have a guitar that was handmade. I don’t know what kind of nut or strings came on it. It was $900. I changed the strings to Ernie Ball Regular Slinkies. The buzz comes from the nut when the E a or d strings are played open.

And got the following answer:

When you play a bar chord on the first fret , is the sound clean ? If yes, then the problem is the fingerboard nut. It would need to have a shim placed underneath it to solve the problem.
Or, replace the nut completely. The grooves are probably too deep. For the price you paid, THAT should have never happened and the nut should be real bone and not PLASTIC.

What you do is loosen the strings, and remove them rom the nut. Use a file or a ruler, and lightly tap with a knife handle or hammer.

Place a piece of vinly (1/16″ think max) underneath the nut. Put the nut on the vinyl but don’t glue it yet.

Tighten the string and tune to pitch. If the sound is good. Loosen the string and use carpenters glue to glue the vinyl piece to the nut . Apply glue at the end of the fingerboard and push the nut against it. The strings will hold it in place.
