I get a kick out of watching Bear Grylls (Man vs. Wild) devise shelters and spears and various survival items with his knifeeven using it as a sort of axe by pounding the back of the blade with a stone or heavy stick to give it more punch. Anyway, this isn’t the place for a multi-tool knife. I don’t even think you want a hinged knife, since the hinge simply introduces a bit of mechanical complexity that could fail.

Gerber and Grylls Release New Line of Survival Knives

Simply moisten the stone and slowly and deliberately draw the knife back and forth with an equal number of strokes for each side of the knife. Occasionally place the knife in water or rub against tall grass or leaves to remove any metal dust that may impede the sharpening process. Never, I reiterate – never run a finger over a knife edge to check it’s sharpness. In a survival setting this can present an injury that can become life-threatening in a short time due to infection and bleeding.
