DAVID asked Can anyone point me in the right direction for pool fiber optic light repair?

We currently have fibre optic pool lights, that have power to them, but just are not lighting up?? Had them cut with a hot knife, Still no luck!! Does anyone know of a company that can help, I am in the Brampton area.

And got the following answer:

It sounds like you may have a bad fiber optic illuminator.
This is typically a 150 to 250 watt metal halide light source.
Basically if you have power and good connections but no light, then check the bulb.
In this case the bulb may be inside of a box.

If you can find the name of the manufacture then you may be able to call a couple of local pool supply companies to find a replacement.

ctmom05 asked How difficult a repair job is replacing a clothes washer lid switch?

We have a Kenmore Washer. The lid switch is not funtioning properly..

My husband is not the “Maytag repair man”, but he is logical, practical and can follow directions.

How tough of a job is replacing the lid switch?

For those of you who are home fix-it folks, and know what you’re talking about – would an intelligent guy be able to muddle thru a job like this, or would you advise hiring the pro?

And got the following answer:

These are very easy to do unplug the machine and use a putty knife to remove the top of the washer by sticking it between the bottom and top panel and prying up on the top lid .Do this in the front of the machine only
Stick the putty knife in the gap in from each side approx.3″ to 4″ you will feel an area where it does not go thru this is where you pry up.The lid should pop off of the two latch like pieces and lift up then just pull it forward and up remember hold onto the lid it will open backwards on you.
Then from there you will be able to see the switch depending on what year and model it is it will either have a magnetic if the magnetic type (to remove this type just squeeze the ends of the switch and push it through the hole in the lid)switch or a micro switch all you have to do is remove the old one and take it to your local appliance parts store and they will fix you up with the new one and just reassemble the machine and your golden. In some cases I have found that the micro switch type will just get pushed aside some how if this is the case just realign it and you will be good to go.

Bladed items etc:- 139 Offence of having article with blade or point in public place

(1) Subject to subsections (4) and (5) below, any person who has an article to which this section applies with him in a public place shall be guilty of an offence.

(2) Subject to subsection (3) below, this section applies to any article which has a blade or is sharply pointed except a folding pocketknife.

(3) This section applies to a folding pocketknife if the cutting edge of its blade exceeds 3 inches.

(4) It shall be a defence for a person charged with an offence under this section to prove4 that he had good reason5 or lawful authority for having the article with him in a public place.

(5) Without prejudice to the generality of subsection

(4) above, it shall be a defence for a person charged with an offence under this section to prove that he had the article with him—

(a) for use at work;

(b) for religious reasons; or

(c) as part of any national costume.

(6) A person guilty of an offence under subsection (1) above shall be liable

(a) on summary conviction, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or a fine not exceeding the statutory maximum or both;

(b) on conviction on indictment, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or a fine, or both.

(7) In this section “public place” includes any place to which at the material time the public have or are permitted access, whether on payment or otherwise.

(8) This section shall not have effect in relation to anything done before it comes into force.

[Criminal Justice Act 1988, s 139 as amended by the Offensive Weapons Act 1996, s 3.]

1 Sections 139–142 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988 which are printed here came into force on the 29 September 1988. For other provisions of the Criminal Justice Act 1988, see in particular Part I: Magistrates’ Courts, Procedure,

2 Part XI contains ss 133–167.

3 For a knife to be a folding pocket-knife within the meaning of this section, it must be readily and immediately foldable at all times, simply by the folding process. A lock-knife, which required a further process, namely activating a trigger mechanism to fold the blade back into the handle, was held not to be a folding pocket-knife (Harris v DPP [1993] 1 All ER 562); followed in R v Deegan [1998] Crim LR 562,[1998] 2 Cr App Rep 121. The section applies to articles which have a blade or are sharply pointed, falling into the same broad category as a knife or sharply pointed instrument;

it does not apply to a screwdriver just because it has a blade (R v Davis [1998] Crim LR 564).

4 Once the prosecution has discharged the burden of proving the ingredients of the offence against s 139(1), the defendant is guilty unless he can discharge the burden imposed by s 139(4) of the Act; see Godwin v DPP (1993) 96 Cr App Rep 244.

5 The fact that a defendant has forgotten that he has with him an article to which s 139 applies does not constitute a defence of good reason within s 139(4)(DPP v Gregson (1992) 157 JP 201).

6 Interpretation of the ordinay everyday use of “for use at work” is not a matter of law but it is for the justices to decide for themselves what the phrase means in the context of the case.

Therefore possession of a bladed article by an unemployed mechanic to do some repairs on his car that was parked in the road could come within this defence, see R v Manning [1998] Crim LR 198, CA.

Various fines and lengths of incarceration apply from two to four years.

chester asked what is the right way to cut berber carpet in the door way? ineed to repair my floor.?

I am doing a repair underneath my floor .I need to cut a section of my carpet to have access.

And got the following answer:

it really depends on how the carpet is running………
best thing I can tell you is to find where the seam is in the door (if there is one there) and get a framing square or some other straight edge and kind of line it up with the door casing then take a box cutter or razor knife and put in a fresh blade then bare down hard and cut it………..
now putting it back together is a whole new chapter…………

Christina asked How much does it cost for a cell phone repair in saudi arabia?

The sim card had accidently been put in the wrong side in the slot, and now its stuck and doesn’t come out. I want to know how much will the repair people charge to remove the sim card here in saudi arabia?
Please reply soon.
Thanks in advance!!

And got the following answer:

The same happened to me a couple time. In this case I take a small sharp knife, slide the same underneath the card, lift the card up very carefully and slide it out by pulling the knife with the right hand and holding the card with one fingertip of the left hand. Works with short fingernails only:)).

Otherwise you take the phone to any shop and have it taking out. That should belong to customer service and not be charged. It’s not a repair.

Good luck!

Hurpus asked How to fix/repair cracking paint and growing mold on bathroom walls?

I’m a first time homeowner and bought a house almost two years ago. The main bathroom doesn’t have a tub, instead it has one of those standing showers with the sliding doors. Recently (Over the past three months), I’ve been noticing the paint used on the walls in the bathroom around the shower have started to crack. Also, black spots have started developing on the walls as well (I suspect mold). I’ve rented several different apartments over the course of many years and I’ve never had a case where the bathroom paint started to crack or mold began to develop. I’m not sure what’s causing this; small enclosed space with not enough room to ventilate the humidity and moisture? Cheap paint not designed for bathroom use, or something else.

What is the cause of this and how can it be fix/repaired and prevented in the future? Did the previous homeowner use some cheap paint that can’t handle moisture and humidity from a shower in the bathroom (Are there paints designed for this specifically)? Is the mold a product of this cheap paint if that’s the case, or am I wrong about all of this?

And got the following answer:

Use a chisel-edged scraper to remove as much peeling and cracked paint as possible.

Spread a thin coat of ready-mixed joint compound over uneven areas where you’ve removed old cracked paint. Use a 9- or 12-inch drywall knife. Since joint compound shrinks as it dries, it may take two or three coats to get a level surface. Sand lightly in between coats to knock down the high spots, and do the final sanding with a medium-fine sanding sponge. Wipe the sanding dust away with a damp sponge.

Mask the edges of anything you aren’t painting, such as countertops, tile, and baseboards. Use blue painter’s tape for the cleanest lines.

Prime the entire surface with one coat of oil- or tinted shellac-based primer. Allow it to dry as recommended on the label. Keep windows open or a fan going to dissipate fumes, because these primers are pungent.

Bradley C asked How to remove and repair interior door casing?

My gf broke broke the door casing to my bathroom and it cracke right where the latch fits into the casing. If my bathroom walls were completely Sheetrock I could easily detach it, build a new one, and reattach it. The only problem is that my bathroom walls have tile goin up from the floor about 4 feet. Our bathroom floor is also tile. I’m having trouble figuring out how I’m going to detach it from the floor and the tile on the wall without messing up any of the tile. I do work in a cabinet shop so I have some knowledge of woodworking and that kind of stuff, however I’ve only been working there for 5 months and I am by no means an expert at it but I do have somewhat of an idea as to what I’m doing. I have access to all the needed tools and I’m sure I can do this on my own. I just need some help on this tricky part. All help is appreciated!!!

And got the following answer:

Are you talking about door casing which is the trim that goes around the door to cover the gap between the door jamb and the wall or are you talking about the door jamb. I figure you mean the jamb because you mentioned the latch fitting into the casing. I figured you were talking about the strike hole. Anyway the best tool for the job to cut the jamb would be a multi tool because if you can be very precise around tile. Cut your caulk lines with a box knife where your casing meets the jamb and wall before removing the casing or trim. You can also use the multi tool for this also but you need to be careful. If you have never used a multi tool practice on something first so you can learn how to control it. When cutting through wood with a multi tool sometimes it helps to rest one hand on the surfice you are cutting while holding the tool with both hands. This may help to guide the tool and keep a straight line.
