Buck Knives

Choosing The Right Hunting Knife by Wayne Foster

Choosing the right hunting knife can be a difficult challenge. If you choose wrong you end up with a paperweight that is more likely to end up in your junk-drawer than on your hip when you need it.

First ask yourself a few questions: What kind of hunting do you do? Do you go after big game or small? Do you trophy hunt or do you meat hunt only? What is the largest animal you envision using the knife on? The smallest? How often do you hunt, are you looking for a knife you can easily carry when you are not hunting?

Seems like a lot of questions but if you don’t know what you are looking for, you will never find the correct one for your personal preferences.

Stainless versus Carbon Steel

This is far too short an article to get into the metallurgy of steel composition. Lets just say that some steels are too soft to hold an edge very well. Some are so hard as to be almost impossible to sharpen in the field. Do some research into the various steels and their grades. Sometimes the difference between a carrier and a drawer-sitter is the blade material.

Folding versus Fixed Blades

Let’s look at the two basic knife styles: fixed and folding blade. A fixed blade knife is just that, fixed in place. Meaning that the blade is permanently fixed in the open position. Due to this design, these knives normally come with a sheath so they can be carried safely. These knives are normally stronger than the folding variety because the steel of the blade runs into or through the handle.

There are no moving parts with a fixed blade knife so they are very reliable. Several manufacturers also produce hunting knives that allow the user to change the blades very quickly.

Folding knives have a pivot point and lock mechanism which allows the blade to close into the handle. A folding knife without the lock should not even be considered for hunting. These are more for the occasional hunter who may also want to carry the knife for daily use. Folding knives are not as strong as a fixed blade by design. However, they are much easier to carry in a pocket or on the belt in a small sheath.

Blade Styles

The next issue we’ll address will be blade style. The four main hunting blade designs are the drop point, clip point, skinning, and caping designs.

Drop Point

The drop point knife is an excellent design for the big game hunter. This design generally features a robust, curved blade of relatively thick steel. These features allow the user to cut the skin off the animal using the entire edge of the knife, rather than just the point. This allows for quick skinning and very little damage to the meat. The design of the drop point also allows for other field cleaning tasks such as gutting and the splitting of the rib cage or pelvis, although a saw or hatchet is the preferred method for the latter two tasks.

Clip Point

Another style of hunting knife is the clip point. The clip point has a somewhat thinner blade than the drop point and has a much more defined point. Most bowies are examples of clip point knives. The flatter blade is more utilitarian in nature and will fit the needs of the majority of hunters, especially those wishing to use the knife as a general duty work knife and not a dedicated hunting knife. The clip point design will perform all of the tasks the drop point will, only not as efficiently. For the occasional hunter this is the perfect design.

The skinning knife is designed to aid in the removal of the skin of big game animals. They tend to have a highly sweeping blades that are designed to effortlessly separate the flesh from the skin. A dedicated skinning knife can be a real time saver for those big game hunters that do the butchering themselves. An added bonus is that the skinning knife can do most of the other game cleaning chores as well as the clip point or the drop point designs.

A knife that is often overlooked is the caping knife. It is used for “caping” big game animals for mounting. When preparing a trophy for the taxidermist, it is important that the hide be preserved for a neck or shoulder mount. Some beautiful trophy animals have been ruined by a hunter using the wrong knife to prepare the animal. Caping knives are dedicated to this task. They are a relatively small knife with a very fine blade.

A note about caping is in order. Do not wait until you have an 1100 pound 6 by 6 elk down to attempt caping for the first time. Practice on smaller animals before you try it on your trophy. It would be a shame to have to to to an antler or skull mount because you messed up. Caping is not difficult, but to do it well requires practice.

Gut Hook Variation

One of the variables you will see in blade design is the gut hook pattern. The gut hook is used by making a small incision with the main blade and then by using the hook to cut open the abdomen. The hook prevents the hunter from “paunching” the animal and possibly affecting the quality of the meat. They do work and it is strictly a matter of personal preference as to the need for one. In the event that you do want the added security that the gut hook provides, they are very similar in price to non-gut hook knives. Be careful when using the gut hook for field dressing. A slip upwards on the handle is an occasion for stitches.

An alternative to purchasing a knife with a gut hook blade is to purchase a separate unit. Some manufacturers offer relatively inexpensive, easily transported units with replaceable blades.

Handle Material

Many hunters put a lot of thought into the blade design of their hunting knife, but put very little thought into the material of the handle. The classic wood, bone, or leather handles are very functional and appealing to the eye. However, don’t overlook the newer handle materials, although not as pleasing to the eye, rubber and other composites merit a look. The newer handle materials offer greatly enhanced control in adverse conditions offering the hunter a greater degree of safety.

Sheath Material

After the blade material, blade design, and handle material are decided, we now move on to the sheath or scabbard. Again, traditional leather is very functional and pleasing to the eye, however, in damp or wet conditions the man-made materials are much more durable. The chemicals used to tan leather will stain most carbon steels and some stainless steels. If you opt for leather, do not store your knife for long periods in the sheath.

Final Thoughts

Your choice of a hunting knife is a very personal one. That being said, you may decide a single knife will not do everything you need to do on your hunt. You might opt for one of the multi knife packs offered by some manufacturers. These are an option bearing in mind that you will have to carry them with you to be of any service.

Happy Hunting!

Snoop Perro asked Would it be illegal to carry this knife in Nevada?

Blade Length: 3 3/4″ (9.5 cm)
Length Closed: 4 7/8″ (12.4 cm)

It will come with a leather knife sheath so I can have it strapped on my belt.

And got the following answer:

Generally speaking, Nevada law is silent on the carrying of knives, with certain specific exceptions which we will address later on. This means that unless explicitly prohibited by NRS or by city or county ordinance, it is legal to carry a knife in Nevada. Since there is no state preemption law for edged weapons like there is for firearms, municipalities and counties may make any law they wish with respect to the carry of knives. The Nevada Revised Statutes do not specify any maximum allowable blade length, or any restrictions as far as open or concealed knife carry. NRS 202.350 prohibits the possession of any switchblade or belt buckle knife, and makes it illegal to carry a concealed dirk, dagger, or machete. Additionally, NRS 202.320, which prohibits the drawing of a deadly weapon in a threatening manner in any situation where a person’s actions do not constitute legitimate and necessary self-defense, applies to knives as well as to firearms. As long as it’s not exhibited in a threatening manner and not carried into any Federal, State, County, City building with a metal detector, or Courthouses, child care facilities, schools or school vehicles which prohibit carrying knives, dirks, daggers, switchblades and trefoils (throwing stars) or other implements which could be used as a weapon. Also some municipalities like the City of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson as well as Reno and Clark County have their own statutes concerning edged weapons. For example Reno defines a dangerous weapon as a knife having a blade length of more than 2″ and prohibits carry of same into any City Park or Recreation area as well as any city courthouse! Clark County prohibits concealed carry of knives with blade lengths of over 3″, however there is no length restriction on knives which are carried openly. Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Henderson also prohibit concealed carry of knives with blade lengths of over 3″, but do not prohibit knives with a blade length of over 3″ on knives which are openly carried. Also Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Henderson prohibit carry of any switchblades, automatic opening, push button knives! North Las Vegas also prohibits ice picks, sharp stabbing tools, straight razors! In addition to that, Las Vegas and North Las Vegas prohibit loitering, fighting or disorderly conduct while carrying any concealed or deadly weapon. A knife or other weapon is considered concealed in Nevada if you must move your clothing in order for the weapon to be visible, also any knife or stabbing implement which is concealed within or disguised as another implement, for example as a pen or brush are also considered concealed even if the pen or brush in question were plainly visible.

Nadia T asked What would be a good grad present for my boyfriend?

I just can’t think of anything to get him. Any other occassion and I’m fine but I’m having probolems with this one. Preferably something in the price range of less than $100 but more than 30 or 40. Also, nothing cheesy like gold engraved whatever or fancy pens or wallets.

And got the following answer:

If he is a nerd then get him something from ThinkGeek or The Sharper Image.

ALSO….sex is over rated as a gift if you have been seeing someone for a while. I got a hot tub and dinner night once for my bday and it was great but sex is sex….it happens all the time….have sex with him anyway just get him something else that is good.

Don’t get him anything stupid or traditional like a briefcase or fancy note paper or a wallet or anything….those all suck.

Under a hundred bucks is hard though…..so here are my best ideas…

I dunno buy him something like a gift card to best buy.
Or something practical like an electronic air pump for car tires.
OR ….i forgot…

Or something practical like a automatic self cleaning razor (this would be what I would want honestly cause regular blades wear too quickly and are tooo expensive)

or get him a good multi tool or knife….Leatherman or Gerber …. (ALWAYS A GOOD GIFT….ALWAYS!!!!!!)

Or a bodygroom (a body hair shaver, not really for the face)….

Or get him some nice headphones…in ear, noise canceling…

Okay that is all I can think of…except for a lot of his favorite beer.

little_purple_whale asked What do I look for when buying a switchblade?

It’s not for me it’s for somebody else, and also about how much they cost?

And got the following answer:

You need to check the legality in your area first. After that, you can get a piece of junk for 10 bucks. Benchmade makes good automatic knives in the U.S., expect to pay 200-500 for a good one. Next, ask why would your friend would want one? And why get it through you if his intentions were legitimate? Automatic knives are useful only to law enforcement, military, or collectors.

Betelgeuse asked Why am I not allowed to carry a knife on my person for protection while walking alone at night?

And got the following answer:

Eustuff is only partially correct here. You do have the right to carry your knife as long as it is not concealed and within certain size limits. Even the right to bear arms is not absolute. You can’t walk around carrying a fully automatic weapon without the appropriate license and and you still eed a permit to carry a concealed handgun. Many of the Consttutional amendments are not absolute. For examplpe, the 1st Amendment does not give you the right to yel fire in a crowded theater, unless there is actually a fire. So, carrying your Buck 110 in it’s sheath on your belt should be fine. In your pocket..not okay.

Charlie asked Is it legal to carry a knife in GA ?

I have a small buck knife and a small swiss army knife. could you fill me in on the knife laws in Georgia

And got the following answer:

Hi there, i live in GA and carry at least 2 knives everywhere. I have spoken to many police officers and looked up the laws a lot. Basically, if you’re irresponsible, any knife is illegal. If you stay out of trouble and act respectful and mature about the subject, a cop isn’t going to hassle you. But the knife laws are different for different parts of GA, in major city’s such as Atlanta, Augusta ect. The legal carry length concealed or visible, is 3″
In the smaller counties outside of the major city’s it’s usually 5″ concealed or visible. Butterfly knives are still illegal to carry anywhere, so are automatic knives (switchblades) unless you are of law enforcement, or military background.

Cody asked Is the hunter dual action automatic knife from bladeplay a good product?

I recently ordered one for 14 bucks off of bladeplay, and I want some opinions and what to expect when I get it

And got the following answer:

Based solely on the price, I would not expect much. Good quality steel is expensive, the properties of a good knife, including the ability to hold an edge, generally cost a few bucks more than that. Plus WTF is a “dual action automatice”? Sounds taktikool.

Michael asked whats the best legal switchblade knife under a hundred?

i’m looking for a good durable knife that looks nice, is cheap, is legal, and has a big blade.

And got the following answer:

Depends on what state you are in for sure.

(Florida they are legal).

Word of caution though, getting a cheap automatic knife (the actual name of them) is flirting with disaster. Most of them that are actually good are going to be over a hundred. Good meaning will retain their spring, throughout hundreds and thousands of openings, versus one that works good for about 2 or 3 months.

Personally, Microtech is considered the “King of Spring” they make the best automatic knives there are. I would suggest ponying up a little more cash for 120 or 130 you can pick up a Mini Socom Elite, which is what I consider to be one of the better everyday carry tactical automatic folders you can get. Go to a gun and knife show in your area and you can probably pick up one for just about 100 bucks. You can also grab cheaper ones but remember you get what you pay for.

You can pick up some HALOs one way out the front knives from Microtech for about 100 bucks.

Kershaw knives have what is called an “assisted opening” which if automatics are illegal in your area, assisted opening knives generally aren’t. Assist opening basically means the blade flies open with a slight nudge of your thumb in opening it.

Emerson makes incredible knives, that would fit your price range and have what is called a WAVE. Which is a stud that sticks out of the knife that allows it to open as soon as you pull it from your pocket, by catching on the edge and opening the knife for you. For the money that is the fastest deploying knife you can get. (No buttons or opening needed, the simple act of pulling it out opens the knife for you).

“Big Blade” depends on your definition, most states have blade length limits, and the bigger the blade the more expensive it is going to be in an automatic, and it has one extra issue. If it is a fast auto, a bigger blade has more weight behind it, and I have seen people lay themselves open when a big bladed automatic pops open and throws the knife out of their hand.

Here is a good one that could meet your needs: http://www.highdesertco.com/desertfox.htm

It uses Microtechs dual action hidden bolster. Which will open like a regular knife and by all means look like a regular folder. But also has a way to open it automatically with the touch of a button (that is hidden). That design has gotten so popular (the original Microtech LCC is amazing) that it is widely copied. Keep in mind, Microtech does it better than anyone else, and at a Gun and Knife show you can probably get one, but you will pay for it.

Somethings to keep in mind, if you ask for their Microtechs, you are immediately going to garner the respect of a knife salesman. Similarly if you ask for Emerson, MOD, or Strider knives.

Masters of Defense (MOD) also has some really great tactical folders in Automatic. I would highly suggest the CQD Dieter Mod II. But really any MOD is nice.

That would be my best advice though is to check at your local Gun and knife show, or any Blade show that comes to town. The best place to get some AMAZING deals on knives is at Blade Magazine’s annual Blade show in Atlanta. I got knives 50 to 60 bucks cheaper there then anywhere else.

Additionally really know what you are looking for as far as what is legal in your state. It would suck to spend any amount of money on a knife, then get arrested and have it confiscated. Know your laws and carry exactly what is legal to carry.

David G asked I have heard you can get Buck 110 automatic conversion knives. Anyone know a reputable dealer to get one from?
