Why buy anything for Father’s Day?
Do You Appreciate Your Dad?
Showing Love Need Not Cost Money
In the current economy, with so many out of work, or not working full time, children, even adult children, are left wondering what to get dad for Fathers Day, or his birthday. Do you buy him a tie, get him a nice card, take him out to, or fix him, a nice dinner, etc.? Mothers can be so much easier to get a gift for, but fathers are a more complicated species which is not often understood, so deciding on a gift can get complicated.

Ethan Sandrue asked What is a similar blade to what Im looking for?

I’m looking for a good folding blade. Not so much a pocket knife as a folding sword or even bowie knife. I like the idea of the Boker folding kukri ($20), and I really like the Cold Steel Spartan (a hefty $60). Are there any other blades like this on the market for me? Links would be appreciated, best answer gets ten points. Thanks in advance.

And got the following answer:

A kukri is not a “sword,” but a type of machete. There are no folding swords, because swords must be stronger than a folding action will allow.

The Spartan is less than a foot long. It’s basically an extra-large pocketknife, comparable to a folding hunting knife.

If you like the Boker or the Cold Steel, buy them. There aren’t many other designs that fit your description, and even if they are, they’re marginally useful in the real world.

asked What is the most extreme location you’ve visited? How did it make you feel?

Have you climbed a high, desolate mountain? Camped alone in the middle of the desert? Trekked through the jungle with just a pocket knife and a clean pair of socks? Jumped head first into a foreign city where you didn’t know a soul or speak the language?

How did you feel during and after your experience? What are your favorite memories? Is it something you would do again? Would you recommend it to others? Did you ever fear for your life during your trip?

And got the following answer:

I was a Peace Corps volunteer and sent to a tiny spec in the middle of the Pacific 400 miles from Guam called Pohnpei (in Micronesia). No electricity, running water and it is one of the rainiest places on Earth. But WOW, what a wonderful world. And at night, when lying on the roof of an abandoned Japanese WWII building, you could see the entire Milky Way. And if you stared long enough up into the night sky — you felt like you were falling … falling up. It was amazing.

Border Crossing asked How to convince my mom to let me go hiking?

I want to do some hardcore hiking this summer and pack some vertical in my boots. The problem is I have no friends and none of my family members find the appeal to having a granola bar perched on a boulder overlooking the world. Or they dread having to walk 10 miles in a day. My mom is fine with me wandering about town for 5 hours, but I guess maintained trails with established destinations aren’t her thing. I’ll be safe, I know all the wildlife in the region and how to react. I know how to dress for the weather. I’ll bring a map, my compass, a pocket knife, and enough water and food. And you can’t tell me the people are dangerous. Why would someone hike a 5000 foot mountain to kill someone when they could just hide out in their backyard or in an alley or basically ANYWHERE in town really?

And got the following answer:

Well, you didn’t give your age so you could be 10 or 18. I’ll guess you’re on the older end.

As an experienced hiker and backpacker here’s how I see it. A lot of people will say that you should “never hike alone.’ I don’t think that’s true. I’ll put my money on one experienced, responsible hiker over two novices any day of the week.

I do the majority of my hiking and backpacking alone and while you miss out on the opportunity of sharing something cool with someone else, at the end of the day we’re always alone anyway and that’s VERY true when you’re hiking. It’s all about getting in to your own head and being personally responsible.

My suggestion? You need to either start out with a few shorter solo hikes so she’ll learn to trust you or you need to sit her down and prove to her that you’re responsible enough.

Show her your gear, point out on the map where you’ll be going, call her from the trailhead and when you get back. But most of all tell her that while she may not understand it, the idea of being alone on a trail but it’s really important to you and you understand that personal responsibility is what it’s all about.

A lot of people are afraid of nature brother and hiking seems dangerous to them. And that’s because the only time they hear about hikers is when they die in the wilderness. Now we know the majority of those people aren’t real hikers…they’re just people walking around nature without respecting it. So you need to get her over her fears and lack of knowledge about what it’s all about.

And THEN you behave like a real hiker on the trail and understand your responsibility to nature and yourself.

Hike on.

Jonathan asked What is the explanation for random sick thoughts like in the description?

this usually happens at night i think about suicide, homicide, rape and other terrible things i never thought about this stuff before. i would dream that my love life would go completely wrong and at a dance my date left me and it turned out to be a prank… after that pull out my pocket knife jab it in myself in front of everyone somebody tell me this is normal and i havent taken any drugs or anything

And got the following answer:

I think if you are in your teens or maybe even early twenties it is not uncommon. Your hormones and your world philosophy are still sorting themselves out. Spend a few minutes every day concentrating on simple, positive things, and being grateful for the good things in your life. I think as your self-esteem improves and you find a way to be productive and creative, many of these thoughts will fade away.

If they don’t stop, or if they escalate, then you may want to consult a mental health professional.
