Sodbuster Knives

Over 150 years ago the Sodbuster Plough was invented to plough the hard dry ground of the Great Western Plains of the USA.

Because of the dry arid conditions, the topsoil was baked into an extremely hard crust known as ‘Sod’.

Traditional iron ploughs were not strong enough, and the ‘Sodbuster Plough’ made of steel was introduced to do the job.

The 1862 Homestead Act provided 160 acres of free land to anyone willing to set up a farm in the Great Plains. The top layer of earth or Sod was so tough that it was used as building bricks by Homesteaders in the Great Plains. Other inventions around this time were, barbed wire to fence off and protect farm land, horse-drawn reapers, binders and threshers and combine harvesters.

The Sodbuster Knife is a large size, low cost, single bladed folding knife. The size has been scaled down recently and UK legal carry Sodbuster Junior knives are available.

Alex Z asked How could World War 1 have been a war to end all wars?

I am writing an essay about how ww1 could have been a war to end wall wars. im supposed to discuss ways that the peace conference was supposed to make a peaceful world for the future but it actually made an atmosphere that established distrust and hatred and also set the stage for world war 2.

what should i write? opinions or suggestions would be great.

*this is for a world history class. im a junior in high school.

And got the following answer:

Because of its unprecedented size, scope, violence, and death toll.

It was the first ‘world war’ in the history of mankind; the first time in human history that a million men died in a single battle (the battle of the Somme); infernal machines were used to fight dirty – flame throwers, gas warfare, tanks, machine guns, the aeroplane to drop bombs on people, the Zeppellin to bomb London; the use of huge artillery (like ‘Big Bertha’); the first use of massive submarine warfare against non-combatant ships; horrible trench warfare were men lived like rats and the hand-to-hand combat was nuts.

Michael asked What are the differences between each special forces?

Navy – Seals
Army – Green Berets
Air force – Combat Controllers
Marine corp – Recon

Can someone explain to me what each of the forces do? if there is a differance from one another

And got the following answer:

Good question! Many people don’t even bother to make a distinction.

First, a clarification in terms. Special operations forces (SOF) is the general term for these units. Special Forces is the specific name for the Army’s ‘Green Berets.’ Pay close attention to how I spell the names in my answer: little things like spelling and capitalization really matter.

Doctrinally, the US Navy SEAL teams are for conducting hydrographic reconnaissance, water obstacle demolition, direct action (DA) raids, and special reconnaissance (SR). They can also be used to train foreign militaries (FID/UW) and conduct counter terror operations. In the real world, most of the time they do DA and a bit of SR, though I’ve seen them do FID with some success.

Army Special Forces are the military’s ‘swiss army knife.’ They operate in a team called an “Operational Detachment Alpha,” which is designed to recruit, train, and advise a foreign army. Their goal is not to do the shooting themselves, but rather to enable another nation’s guys to do the work themselves. This means they have to be teachers, linguists, diplomats, AND soldiers. FID/UW is their specialty, but some teams do mostly DA/SR. In the team, they have two weapons guys, two engineers, two medics, two communications guys, an intel guy, a team chief, a team leader, and maybe a warrant officer if they are lucky.

Don’t leave the Ranger battalions out of ARSOF, though. Rangers are pure DA/SR: they do hard, fast, light hits. They are best described as light infantry, rather than SOF, IMO.

Air Force Special Operations Forces (AFSOF) cover a broad umbrella of skills and units. Combat controllers, PJs,and TACP are the biggest ones…but they also include weather guys in there too. Combat controllers are basically there to coordinate the delivery of larger, conventional forces. They do the air traffic control, mark and prepare landing zones, coordinate fires, etc. PJs are search and rescue medics…very similar in training to Special Forces 18D. GREAT guys, btw…never met a PJ I didn’t like. TACP are the air force guys that are with Army units, serving as liaison for Close Air Support (CAS).

The Marine Corps special operations unit is called MARSOC: Marine Special Operations Command. It’s very new, and we are still figuring out what MARSOC is going to be. For now, we are basically emulating SF…Marine Special Operations Teams (MSOTs) are being interchanged with ODAs downrange.

Recon is a different unit. It’s basically the Marine equivalent of Ranger battalions: DA/SR, light infantry stuff. There is a decidedly amphibious bent to it, though: lots of boat operations and helocasting. Force company is pretty much the same thing, but is a MEF level asset, vice a division asset for ‘normal’ recon.

Hope that answers your questions!

Scitech101 asked Why does melee combat still play a key role in modern African warfare?

In 1st world nations and their wars, I cannot remember the last time I heard of a bayonet charge or any form of gunpowder-era melee. It has all been replaced by long range machine guns.

Yet somehow, we hear stories of rebel groups hacking each other up with machetes in Africa AS WELL as firing machine guns at each other. Why is this? Why are melee weapons still prominant in African warfare?
Keep in mind that they use BOTH machetes and machine guns, not just machetes or just machine guns.

And got the following answer:

I think Shooting a man from a distance isnt considered any good in africa. By killing a man with a knife or machete it shows that he is strong or powerful as he watches the man die in front of him while inflicting pain. As the majority of the time shooting someone, is one bullet and he is dead no power or respect comes from that. I think this happens i africa more because of the many gangs and organisations which are there fighting each other

A A asked What is a great auto or foldable knife for self defense?

I have a KABAR but those aren’t exactly legal or practical to carry around. I want an auto or a folding knife that YOU think would be a great self defense last-resort deterrent.

I’m thinking Karambits might give me the most effective survival chances (outside of defusing a situation)
and yes I realize not all Karambit-style knives are foldable. in fact, they usually aren’t. I’m simply considering the “Karambit” shape

And got the following answer:

A knife can be a psychological deterrent by threatening an aggressor, but they are not effective for self-defense combat. Knives have lethal ability, but little to no stopping power. Attackers 97% never feel they’ve been cut or stabbed, even lethal wounds.

Further, you are incurring serious liability to yourself. I have two cases I studied recently in the courts where people used knives to defend themselves from physically larger attackers. Both inflicted superficial wounds that did not stop the attacker, then a fatal stab wound that ultimately killed the attacker. In both cases, the person defending themselves with the knife is now in jail serving murder or manslaughter sentences.

We instinctively WANT knives to be good for self-defense. After all, people in the old days fought with knives and the the military uses them and teaches knife combat. But that is in acts of war and open combat, not our world, the modern civilian world. Our goal is not to kill our enemies. Our goal is to survive and avoid being injured.

If you need something for self-defense, use a blunt force item like a baton, flashlight or walking stick. Or use higher-quality pepper spray like Def-Tec, Fox, or Sabre. The stopping power is going to be much more effective. And always have a back-up plan.
