BMW M6 asked California (Los Angeles) law for minors (17 year old) possessing a spring assisted folding knife?

What is the law for a 17 year old possessing a spring assisted (Non-Switchblade) folding knife with a blade length of around 3.5 inches in Los Angeles County?

Is it illegal? Nowhere in California Penal code section 635k does it say it is illegal. Can somebody clarify for me? I am just worried if I am ever approached by cops and they see it clipped on my pocket.

And got the following answer:

If, as you say, this is not a switchblade, then no state law governs its possession except in some specific areas like school grounds and government buildings (don’t take it there). However, you WILL get in trouble in the City of L.A. if an officer sees it clipped on your pocket, because in the city it is illegal to carry a knife with a blade over 3 inches long in plain view. Keep it in your pocket in the City of L.A.

(Note that this leads to an anomaly when fixed blade knives are considered. State law prohibits carrying a fixed blade knife concealed on your person. City law prohibits carrying a fixed blade knife in plain view. For this reason, I think the City law is not enforceable–but in your case, just put the folding knife in your pocket.)

BTW, the statute numbers for switchblades changed last year. See now Pen C 17235, 21510, 21590–yes, they took one statute and broke it into three statutes: dumb.

Robbie asked Can folding knives fold back on your hand?

I ordered a SOG Flash II in the mail and I know it does not lock when the blade is out. For folding knives in general, if you were to stab something hard (wood, wall) head on are you risking it to fold back on your hand and cut you? I just have a phobia of this with folding knives.

And got the following answer:

Yes, most definitely!

All of my EDC folders have double locks on them. (This is the principal reason, ‘Why’ all of my folding knives are made by Columbia River Knife & Tool. Their, ‘LAWKS’ lock is one of the best inventions since, ‘assisted opening’ blades.

It’s not really stabbing something that you have to worry about; it’s parrying with the back of the blade, instead. While it’s in use, any kind of vibration in the knife can, ‘pop the lock’. Liner locks are the most susceptible to vibration and impact.

Pivot locks that have the release lever on the back of the handle and right underneath the heel of your hand are, like, ‘finger amputation devices’ – You’ve got to be really, ‘green’ and (a little) dumb to use one. These carry knives are, literally, all over the place. Every outdoor store sells them!

Here’s a better picture. You can actually see BOTH locks – A liner lock inside the finger groove, and the LAWKS lever on the back of the knife, immediately behind the blade.

wiwiwiwiwi asked How do spring assisted folding knives work?

want to know how spring assisted knives work because i want one and i know they dont work the same as a switchblade and i mean how do i close it how i open it does it have safety locks etc

And got the following answer:

They are not switch blades because you apply force to a knob on the blade and open it 10% of the way then the coil spring takes over and helps the blade shoot out. I have a sog flash ii black tini tanto and it’s defiantly built to last, it’s legal to carry in texas because its under 3.5 inch and this one does have a side safety. It is a arc lock knife so there is a switch on the side that CLOSES the knife only. I like it better then linear lock because linear lock knives make you put your fingers inside the handle which unlocks the blade while your fingers are at risk of being cut lol, (*well im left handed). Check out Sog Assisted Opening knives. Auto knives are cool like I’ve been looking at a Sog tac Auto but Out the Front knives are more of switch blades in my opinion.

wiwiwiwiwi asked what is a good website to get a spring assisted folding knife?

I want to get a spring assisted folding knife what is a good website where you dont bid on it you just buy it and they have the knife all year round or if there is a knife you recommend with a blade size of 5 inches or less

And got the following answer:

shortkid92 asked Purchasing a spring assist knife, but illegal to carry in PA?

I’m looking into purchasing an SOG Trident folding knife from Dick’s Sporting Goods. This is new to me (I’m not familiar with laws relating o this subject) but from what I hear it is illegal to carry a spring assisted knife in the state of Pennsylvania, regardless of its length. Is this true? If it is, then can I still purchase the knife at the store or is it something I have to purchase off the store’s website? And if that’s the case then is this one of those things where I can own an assisted knife but not be allowed to carry it?

And got the following answer:

Based on my reading, buy something else.
